Totally Grossed Out By the Smell of Meat Cooking

Totally Grossed Out By The Smell of Meat Cooking Last night I was totally grossed out while making beef tacos for my non vegan children. I almost barfed from the smell. I am seriously thinking of letting them cook their own meat. My son is 17 and my daughter is 9, I think that they are perfectly capable of cooking their own crap. I am not forcing my vegan philosophy down their throats any more. They have seen Fast Food Nation, Supersize Me and I gave read some parts of the China Study for my daughter. My daughter has also read Chew on This and Some of Skinny Bitch. We have watched the videos of slaughter houses on YouTube.

I usually just cook vegan food and I make an additional meat dish. They will eat vegan food but they will ask for meat to go with it. I know I can just stop buying meat, but I will be like these omnivore Mom's forcing their vegan teenagers to eat meat. The kids will eat most all fruits and vegetables including things like bok choy, brussel sprouts, asparagus - they love these. They will eat tofu, beans but not tempeh. Overal their diet is excellent except for meat.I have made subtle hints about how I never get sick and that is due to my diet. I have hinted at my excellent blood pressure and cholesterol levels. My daughter used to eat vegan food and love it but she is trying to be like her older brother. Help!

Sticky Fingers Bakery

Yesterday I visited Sticky Fingers Bakery in Washington, DC. The location is great and it was extremely easy for me to get to. I enjoyed the Sticky buns (a cinnamon bun) , it was putstanding! The Chimp bread or Chimp muffins were also the delicious. I bought half a dozen chocolate cupcakes but I was very disappointed. The frosting was good but the cupcake itself was disappointingly average.

I will definitely go back and sample some more things.

Still trying to get the hang if it all

I haven't posted for a long time but I have been reading a lot of great blogs almost daily. I have found lots of new recipes and ideas on just about everything vegan - from shoes to matresses! In the meantime, my son graduated high school and is about to go to college and my daughter will be starting fourth grade in the fall.

Tomorrow is my daughter's 9th birthday and we are just getting ready to go to Sticky Fingers bakery for a birthday cake. I have not been to the bakery even though it's about 10 minutes from my home by train. I will let you know about my experience.

Hanging In There

vegannewbie
I have survived halloween without my very favorite candy. I found a vegan alternative at Whole Foods which was delicious.
The same cannot be said for my lip balm. I tried the Merry Hempsters peppermint lip balm and it was the most vile tasting thing. Not a hint of peppermint in sight. I am looking for a great tating, very emoillent vegan lip balm. I do not care about the cost, I want something fantastic.

Hanging in There

It has been eight weeks since I took the plunge. I still salivate at the sight of cheddar but I an hanging in there. Cheddae was quite an addiction for me. Eggs and other animal products, I do not miss at all.

I had been trying to eat more greens but since the spinach scare, I have cut back on chard and kale also just to be on the safe side. I hope this clears up soon, I do not want to live in fear of a vegetable (LOL)

Looking back on the last six weeks

vegannewbieLooking back on the last six weeks, I realized that I made quite a few mistakes - trying to keep my meals completely healthy. Last Saturday,. I made a batch of Oatmeal/Chocolate chip cookies. I used a vegan margarine, vegan chocolate chips, dried cranberries , whole wheat pastry flour and all-purpose unbleached flour. It was a variation on my favorite cookie. (yummy!)

I have also been cooking from scratch. I do not know why I am being so self righteous. This week, I am going to lighten up. It is OK to use canned beans or frozen falafel or prepared humuus.

I hope this is just a phase and that it is over!

Week Four- Salivating over Cheddar

vegannewbie
There I was standing infront of Whole Foods deli counter trying to think of reasons not to buy a chunk of cheddar cheese. I could literally taste the tang of the sharp cheddar but I somehow got the courage to leave the grocery store sans cheddar!

I used to have a serious love affair with cheese. Eggs I can do without, no problem. Cheese, I seriously mourn- the plight of the cows are not reason enough most days. I try to think of my arteries being unclogged of the cholesterol. I think that I have come too far to turn back, but it isn't easy!
